Welcome to TLC Online

TLC Online has Adult Basic Education classes (basic Reading, Math, and Language)

TLC Online offers GED Preparation classes. These classes help students study in all of the areas needed to prepare for the GED exam.

TLC Online also gives ESOL classes online: Foundations, Low Beginning, High Beginning, and Low Intermediate, High Intermediate, and Advanced. We also offer Citizenship Preparation.

TLC Online assigns each student to a teacher. The teacher and the student communicate through email, telephone calls, and face-to-face tutoring.

Students need to be self-motivated and able to learn through using interactive software with teacher assistance.

Students save, time, money, and gasoline by taking online classes.

Students can study at their own pace and on their own time schedule (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) as long as they work for 4 hours each week in their class.

Online instructors answer student questions, monitor student progress and activity, and help to motivate students to achieve their educational goals.

TLC Online Information and Courses

The Learning Center (TLC) Online at The English Center provides Adult Basic Education, GED Preparation, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and Citizenship Preparation to adults by crossing traditional geographic boundaries through the use of evolving Internet and computer-based technology throughout Miami-Dade County and the state of Florida.

TLC Online currently has over 900 student enrollments, which include home-based students and students based at three One-Stop Centers located throughout Miami-Dade County. We deliver curriculum content to students using the following online courseware: SkillsTutor, Lifetime Library, Contemporary’s GED Online, and ESOL/Citizenship Preparation courses created by our own curriculum specialist and accessed via Moodle.

TLC Online's curriculum is delivered through a combination of using third-party online courseware and using courses and supplemental lessons created in-house and delivered via Moodle.

Our complete TLC Online program includes the following required courses:

Online Adult Basic Education (ABE)
The purpose of TLC's online ABE courses is to provide basic literacy and life skills for adults who are performing at or below the eighth grade level. The content includes reading, language arts/writing, and mathematics. Students are tested and placed in each class according to their needs. Students receive supplemental lessons and Internet resources via e-mail to enhance and customize the students’ learning experiences.

Students are able to access courses 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Each student is assigned a teacher who guides, instructs, monitors, and is available as a resource for specified hours during the week.

Online ESOL

TLC Online offers four levels of ESOL to help students communicate in English (Foundations, Low Beginning, High Beginning, and Low Intermediate).

Our courses prepare students to communicate at work, at school, and at home. They will also learn about the culture of their new community and the American way of life. Students receive supplemental lessons and Internet resources via e-mail to enhance and customize the students’ learning experiences.

Online Citizenship Preparation

Citizenship education aims to help teach roles and responsibilities in a modern democracy and seeks to support students in dealing with difficult social questions. Citizenship education addresses the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary for the student to be able to function in a democratic society and to pass their citizenship exam. The democratic rights and responsibilities of the student and the meaning of citizenship at a variety of scales will be explored.

Online GED Preparation

The General Education Development (GED) classes offered online at The English Center are individualized and self-paced. The classes include the five content areas: reading, math, language, science, and social studies.

TLC Online offers the Official GED Practice Test (OPT) to all GED students. Online teachers analyze the prescriptive results and offer remedial help to students who need it.
